Google Analytics update - browser size analysis

Google is going full steam ahead with the development of Google Analytics, its own free web analytics tool, at the moment.

Browser size analysis

I discovered this new function while reading a TechCrunch article, and thought it was worth spending a bit of time writing about it.

This new tool is available (or should be shortly) under the Content > In page analytics menu in the GA interface. To use it, just click on the new "Browser size" button on the right hand side of your screen, right next to the "Show bubbles" and "Show colours" buttons

Why use the browser analysis feature?

Well you'd be surprised at how many websites currently do not display well in different browser sizes, and what looks good when viewed on a high resolution screen may look awful on a tablet or laptop. This is a very often forgotten part of website development which can have strong consequences in terms of conversions on your website.
For example, if you display a very large image in your website header, some users with low resolutions may not even get a chance to see your valuable content and may just leave the site after a few seconds. In a more and more competitive web environment it is crucial to grab visitors' attention within a few seconds or risk losing them forever.

Screen resolution report

So now that this new feature is available, you can use it to view your website as your visitors would see it, and in combination with the screen resolution report you can adjust your layout as necessary to match visitors' requirements. (the screen resolution report is available in GA under Audience > Technology > Browser & OS > Primary dimension set to Screen resolution)

The key here is to find the right balance between a good design/layout and content visibility so that your website performs according to your objectives.

Content experiments update

As mentioned in my previous post (So long website optimizer), you can now run and manage A/B tests directly from the GA interface. It appears however that multi variate tests (MVT) are not fully supported at the moment, so we'll have to wait and see if/when they come back. As it was such an important feature of Website Optimizer, I'm sure it won't take Google too long to add it to GA.

Google is doing a great job at integrating all of its free tools under one roof (while messing SEOs around with animal themed algorithm updates!), so make the most of them.
